Wind is strongest in the colder months and overnight. Other Renewables, mostly utility-scale solar and biomass, are strongest in the warmer months and at midday. Together they make a steadier supply than either alone. Our proposal: expand transmission, with projects like Segment A, so more of that output reaches demand instead of being curtailed.
Wind and Other Renewables are growing and complement each other by season and by hour. To get the most value from them, their output has to reach the places that use it. When transmission is congested, renewable output can be curtailed, turned down even though it is available, and other plants, often gas-fired, fill the gap. Expanding transmission, with projects such as Segment A, is our proposed way to reduce curtailment, use more of the renewable output, and ease pressure on prices.
